NATIVITY RECONSIDERED: EL NIÑO

August 8, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Stream this performance via The Met’s YouTube page.

Join us for the digital premiere of this unique rendering of John Adams’s monumental Christmas oratorio, El Niño, specially arranged for AMOC and set in The Met Cloisters as part of JULIA BULLOCK’S 2018-2019 season as Artist-in-Residence at Met Live Arts.

AMOC’s performance of EL NIÑO celebrates Latin-American poets and the voices of women in the Fuentidueña Chapel at the Cloisters, a space historically dedicated to male-dominated, Western-European art and ideas. Exploring the central themes of the Nativity—the immaculate conception, the unique relationship between mother and child, and gift giving—the work ruminates on the notion that, with the promise of new life, there is the equal threat of violence and sacrifice.

Featuring the formidable vocal quartet of Julia Bullock, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Davóne Tines, and special guest J’Nai Bridges, and conducted by Christian Reif, this performance was recorded in December 2018 and was the World Premiere of this new arrangement. This event marked AMOC’s debut performance in New York City.
