GAY GUERRILLA / Digital Stream

July 1, 2023 - July 8, 2023

View the performance of Gerard & Kelly’s GAY GUERRILLA at the Centre Pompidou in Paris online. Founding members JULIA EICHTENCONOR HANICKCOLEMAN ITZKOFF, and DAVÓNE TINES join dancers from the Paris Opera Ballet (Samuel Akins, Guillaume Diop, Germain Louvet, and Awa Joannais), musicians from Wild Up (Richard Valitutto and Seth Parker Woods), pianist Adam Tendler, and performer Soa de Muse in a series of performances channeling Eastman’s singular voice and celebrating queer resistance.

Gerard & Kelly’s installation transforms the ground-floor Galerie 3 at the Centre Pompidou into a minimalist disco, which features a choreographic performance set to two scores by Julius Eastman, “Prelude to the Holy Presence of Jeanne d’Arc” (1981) and “Gay Guerrilla” (1979).

Eastman infused his musical experimentalism with a passion for political engagement. Gerard & Kelly re-introduce Eastman’s radical aesthetics in a global context where queer and transgender people from Uganda to the United States are once again threatened with violence, homophobic legislation, oppression, and scapegoating.

This special performance in partnership with Opéra National de Paris is produced by & Compagnie and co-produced by AMOC*, Centre Pompidou, and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence with support from enoa and the European Union’s Creative Europe program. GAY GUERRILLA is conceived, directed, and choreographed by Gerard & Kelly.
