SUMMARY:ROME IS FALLING
DESCRIPTION:Rome is Falling  \nConceived & Composed by DOUG BALLIETT \nAugust 10\, 2024 | 4pm\nThe Clark Art Institute\nWilliamstown\, MA \nTickets \nAriadne Greif*\, soprano\nReggie Mobley*\, countertenor\nPaul Appleby\, tenor\nDoug Williams*\, bass-baritone\nJoe Monticello*\, flute\nClay Zeller-Townson*\, bassoon\nKeir GoGwilt\, violin\nColeman Itzkoff\, cello\nDoug Balliett\, composer/double bass\nJosh Stauffer*\, electric guitar\nElliot Figg*\, keyboard I\nMikael Darmanie*\, keyboard II\nJonny Allen\, percussion\nYoung person’s choir* (with Caitlyn Koester*) \n*Denotes guest artists \nRome was one of the greatest civilizations in the world; yet\, like all empires\, it fell. Why\, and how? The story is a mixture of politics\, betrayal\, immigration\, religion\, climate\, pandemic\, natural disaster\, xenophobia\, and bad luck (in short\, everything human\, and everything we face today). Rome is Falling\, an opera composed by American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*) member Doug Balliett\, is a zany lesson on the absurdity of what can happen when powerful people lose power. In his ever-prescient\, ever-joyful way\, Balliett brings audiences of all ages on a musical journey through a world that includes lollipops\, a ridiculous number of characters\, and an emperor with a chicken fetish. \nTickets $10 ($8 members\, $7 students\,$5 children 15 and under).

SUMMARY:AMOC* AT THE CLARK
DESCRIPTION:Tickets are now SOLD OUT for our LIVE\, outdoor performances at The Clark\, featuring violinist MIRANDA CUCKSON and electronic artist CHRISTOPHER BURNS\, directed by ZACK WINOKUR. \nThese performances feature Luigi Nono’s La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura (1988-89)\, which takes as its inspiration a wall inscription the composer encountered in a monastery in Toledo: “Wanderer\, there is no way\, there is only wandering.” A richly theatrical\, spatialized composition for violin and electronics\, the piece is a meditation on how we move forward when no path seems to exist. Hailed as one of the foremost interpreters of Nono’s penultimate piece\, AMOC violinist Miranda Cuckson is joined by electronic artist Christopher Burns in a new\, intimate\, and dramatic staging of the work directed by Zack Winokur. The performance\, which frames the violinist as a displaced wanderer in striking confrontations with surround sound electronics\, will be specially created for the breathtaking encounter of landscape and architecture that is the Clark campus. Cuckson and Burns’s “thrilling\, thoughtful” recording of the piece was named one of the best classical recordings of 2012 by The New York Times. Winokur\, whose work has been described as “pure poetry” (Boston Globe)\, joins this longtime collaboration in an outdoor\, moonlit production that promises to be a visceral experience of this rare experimental masterpiece.
